Brevard New Home for ESPN
By Barbara Caywood  Jun 29, 2002
ESPN Radio is coming to Brevard County. On July 15, Melbourne station WIXC 1060-AM will switch its format from adult standards music to 24-hour ESPN Radio. Why the change? Jeff Taylor, operations manager for Genesis Communications sister stations in Tampa, said it coincides with the change to ESPN Radio by Orlando station WHOO 1180-AM. "We're switching the Orlando station, and by switching WIXC, too, it gives us a huge ESPN coverage in that part of Florida," Taylor said. "That's what we want and thafs what ESPN wants." WIXC operations manager Greg Sherlock said the combined coverage area of WHOO and WIXC will give listeners the ability to pick up ESPN Radio throughout Central Florida. "It gives sports fans in the area a powerful one-two punch," he said. "Advertisers will love to reach the 2549 (age group) men with this station combination." WKC will carry Tampa Bay Bucs games live. Taylor also said a high school "Game of the Week" is being considered. "There's nothing set in stone on that yet," he said. WKC, with a transmitter located in Mims, is a 10,000-watts station days and 5,000-watts nights, but there is a construction permit pending with the FCC to increase day coverage to 50,000 watts. In addition to exclusive NBA and Major League Baseball game coverage, ESPN Radio carries sports talk shows like Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Tonp Kornheiser Show and The Dan Patrick Show. On weekends, the network broadcasts The NFL on ESPN and College Game Dap on ESPN Radio, with live reports and interviews from game sites throughout the season.
