In an effort to protect localism in radio, the FCC developed a program in 1999 called LPFM Community radio. This program was designed to limit huge commercial media conglomerates from monopolizing the airwaves, enabling independent radio stations like "The Groove" to be an integral part of the local community. In June 2000, an application was filed with the FCC for a local community radio station in Brevard County. "The Groove" was born. Over the next 3 years we patiently waited for the FCC to approve our application. In the Spring of 2003, still under the hope "The Groove" would be granted a radio license, we applied for 5 additional signal booster towers, to expand our coverage area within Brevard County. In March 2004, the FCC granted "The Groove" the license and the approval to start construction. In April 2004, the FCC approved our 5 additional signal booster towers, thus increasing The Groove's coverage area throughout Brevard and Northern Indian River Counties. |
On April 5th, 2005....WGRV-FM 107.9 & WGRZ-FM 93.1..."The Groove"...Hits the air and smooth Jazz returns to the space coast. The initial coverage area (Stage 1) will include Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, and the Beaches. |
