Steve tells us in an email;
"My background in radio was limited. I got my First-Class
Radio Telephone license in 1965 when I was in the 10th grade. I could only
get a job at WTLN(-AM 1520)
in Apopka. No one in town would hire me. I worked there for several years
and finally WABR(-AM 1440) hired me to do 6p-12M on Saturday and Sunday as well as all their vacation
shifts. This was a big deal for an 18-year-old as they were THE number one
country station in town having beaten WHOO(-AM
990) in all the rating periods. I also worked as a booth announcer at WFTV,
Channel 9. Then, in 1969, I had to take a leave of absence and attend OCS
for the US Navy. I finished that and went to the University of Florida,
on the Navy's time, to finish school. I worked in news there at WDVH(-AM
980).
I got out of the reserves in 1971 and came to WLOF(-AM
950) when I graduated from Florida and did news there for about 1.5 years until my
dad sold the station. It was great fun... " "I eventually became
a Special Agent with U. S. Secret Service, spent 25 years with them and retired
recently as Special Agent in Charge of the Memphis Field Office. Big
change in my career plans!
