History Of WPRD
Metroplex Communications of Orlando Inc. purchased WAJL for $1.1 million, they stated that its new AM station will be called WPRD and will play classics of the '40s, '50s and '60s. Peter Ferrara, Metroplex president, said the station will be known as PRIDE-1440. He hopes advertisers will appreciate what he describes as the fine fit between WPRD and Metroplex's existing WJYO-FM 107.7, known as JOY-108, which plays light, adult hits. The new marketing slogan that he hopes will unleash a rash of combination ad sales? Would you believe, ''We're Central Florida's pride and joy.''

Station owner pulls plug In fight over WPRD-AM
Orlando Sentinel
Jun 4, 1993
Listeners of WPRD-AM probably were surprised to hear silence when they tuned to 1440 on Thursday evening. In a dispute with Rama Broadcasting, potential buyers of the station, Paxson Broadcasting, pulled the plug on WPRD at 5:20 p.m. Both sides say the station could be off the air for a couple of days until a judge can intervene. Chairman Lowell "Bud" Paxson went to the WPRD offices at 2001 N. Mercy Drive to shut down transmission because he was "concerned about the legal operation of the station," said David Murray, technical director for Paxson Broadcasting. WPRD now airs CNN headline news, talk shows and religious and ethnic programming on Sundays. It is the new base of talk show host Clive Thomas, who is on from 9 to 11 a.m. daily.
