History Of WXXO In May of 1988, rather than compete against WORL-AM 1270 and the new WJHM-FM 101.9 for urban-contemporary fans the station became WXXO with a full-time "gospel explosion" format. Since then, WXXO has made a small but notable dent in the Arbitron ratings. It plans to simulcast its signal next year on sister station WXXU-AM 1300 in Cocoa. Preacher-announcers like Ray Crume say you can't separate gospel music. Station Manager Willie Clark acknowledges that WXXO is in the "business of gospel" and aims for a more general audience. The morning show, hosted by longtime gospel announcer Joe Flores with newsman Max Johnson, has the informational style of any larger station while stressing news of the black community. |
