"The Day The Music Died"    2-2-09
It’s 50 years ago on February 3, 1959 that a a single-engine plane crashes into a snow-covered Iowa field that instantly kills three passengers. 22-year-old Buddy Holly, 28-year-old J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and 17-year-old Ritchie Valens finish their performance in Clear Lake. They board a small airplane for their final destination, a 300-mile flight, that lasts only minutes after take off. Here is the audio from KLGO-AM 1300 in Mason City, Iowa on the night of Feb. 3.        


WMFE Takes A Big Hit    2-3-09
Always great to hear from Pat Flannagan. She has let us know the latest from WMFE. The economic crisis continues to hit radio hard. From a press release from  WMFE-FM 90.7  "... revenue sources have felt the impact of the economic slowdown.  The only way for WMFE to offset all of these losses is to reduce its expense budget..." "...WMFE will be canceling WMFE-TV’s The Arts Connection and laying off its staff of six, laying off an additional nine positions, and eliminating one vacant position.  Additionally, WMFE’s remaining staff will be required to take two weeks of unpaid leave (furlough) during this fiscal year, and the employer matching 401K funds have been eliminated for the foreseeable future." The host of The Arts Connection, Secily Wilson, and WMFE-FM’s Dave Glerum, an 18-year employee and music director have been let go. 


"People Power Hour" Now Three Hours    2-10-09
WEUS-AM 810 Orlando, has made an exciting move. Host George CrossleyJoe Miranda and John Hamilton will now be heard, weekdays from 1PM until 4PM. 


Phil Hendrie Is Coming To A Radio Near You     2-12-09
Radio funny man Phil Hendrie, who got his start in radio at Winter Park's WBJW-AM 1440, has been picked up by WELE-AM 1380 and WIXC-AM 1060. Hendrie is on nearly 90 stations nationwide.

"The Game" Coming To 740    2-14-09
WQTM-AM 740 "La Preciosa", will drop the Modern Spanish Pop format and return to sports programming on Monday, Feb 16, as WYGM-AM 740 "The Game". The switch happens at midnight Sunday. The initial lineup will include Fox Sports' national feed. "The First Team on Fox with Steve Czaban" Monday-Friday 6AM-9AM, "Dan Patrick" from 9AM-Noon, J.T. "The Brick" from  10PM-2AM. Jim Rome will move from WHOO-AM 1080 to the Noon-3PM slot on WYGM in a few months.

and Shot Doctor heard on WFLF-AM 540, will eventually join "The Game".

WIXC Picks Sports Director     2-19-09
Ryan Feldman joins WIXC-AM 1060 as afternoon producer/anchor and sports director. Ryan comes by way of WIP-AM 610 a CBS owned sports station in Philadelphia.


Locals Make Talker Magazine "Heavy 100"    2-20-09
Each year Talkers Magazine issues their survey of the top talkers in the country. This years list includes from WTKS-FM 104.1, the Dean of Orlando talk, Jim Philips and Russ Rollins and crew known as "The Monsters". From Daytona Beach and WNDB-AM 1150, Marc Bernier has been named to the list for the 13th consecutive year. WDBO-AM 580's morning host Jim Turner made the "Talkers 250" list.

Celebrating birthdays this week are Carole Nelson on Monday and Mark "Mr. News" Williams of WNDB-AM 1150 will celebrate on Wednesday. Happy birthday to you both!
